GARDEN
EDUCATION FAIR
BRINGS
GREEN TO MONTCLAIR
Our Garden Club’s
GARDEN EDUCATION FAIR was held on Friday, April 4th and Saturday, April 5th at the
United Way Building Auditorium and Avis Campbell Gardens at 60 South Fullerton Avenue in Montclair, the meeting place/headquarters
of The Garden Club of Montclair.
Admission free and open to
the public, the event drew many adults and children from all parts of the greater Montclair community. Saturday
was especially well-attended.
Hourly, each day a
lucky participant won a Door Prize. Many folks went home laden with "treasures" that helped them enjoy their
home gardens more fully.
The Garden Club's Garden
Boutique offered high quality wares including gloves, clippers, Bloom saver, Green Bag, Seed Starting Kits, and other
garden related items that further added to the pleasure to be enjoyed as spring makes its way into town (finally!) and the
weather warms to make flowers bloom.
Community organizations
participating with the Garden Club included The Van Vleck Gardens, Montclair Art Museum, Montclair Historical
Society, Watchung Book Sellers, Presby
Iris Gardens, Caldwell Beekeeper, Mountainside
Hospital, and the Montclair Library. Each
group added their own unique expertise and experience to the Fair and presented educational exhibits that inspired,
intrigued, and excited visitors!
Exhibitors ranged from adults
with many years of experience in technical horticultural fields to young students who proudly displayed their new learnings
and research projects in creatively designed displays and descriptions of their successful community projects. Their
exhibits make Montclair proud!
For more specific information,
go to the Garden Education Fair page on this website and follow the links to participant websites.
In addition to the exhibits there
were Backyard Habitats; Floral Demonstrations; and an Arboreal Horticulture Display. Demonstrations
were held in the Avis Campbell Gardens at the back of the building on how to properly prune roses. Barbara Meyer, a
past president of the GC of Montclair, and a member of the rose society, used the rose garden that she has planted and nurtured
for more than a decade for the teaching session.
Fair visitors
also learned about care for orchids and lilacs, how to create a window box to bloom in full color all summer.
A representative
from the Township was on hand to describe the science and biology of a typical composting pile. The Township also has composting bins available to residents at a substantially lower cost than can be purchased
elsewhere. Contact Gray Russell's office for details or to purchase.
THANK
YOU FOR COMING TO
OUR
GARDEN EDUCATION FAIR!
This fair was our first one, and our concept was to bring together the wonderful community groups that work tirelessly
and consistently to make Montclair a green township of extraordinary beauty and history.
We trust that visiting families
and friends took home lots of great ideas to make their home spaces a bit greener!
If you would like to tell
us how you enjoyed the Fair, please send us your comments by E-mail: GardenClubOfMontclair@yahoo.com

Connie Young Created Book of Evidence
According to Firth
Fabend, outgoing President of our club, "The Board was absolutely WOWED by the Book of Evidence that Honorary Member,
Connie Young, put together to submit our club for this prestigious award." Obviously the judges were also impressed,
as The Garden Club of Montclair received the "CLUB OF THE YEAR" award at the annual meeting of the Garden
Club of New Jersey.
President Gretchen
Prater discussed the Club of the Year Award at the October Program Meeting and showed the impressive
original Book of Evidence to members in attendance.
An e-mail to the
membership further announced our great honor, thanks to the hard work of Connie Young to document the achievements with multitudes
of stories and pictures.
