Organized in 1926 and incorporated in 1950 The Garden Club of Montclair, Inc. is affiliated with the Garden Club
of NJ and is part of the Central Atlantic Region of National Garden Clubs, Inc.
Garden Club of Montclair
activities are carried out by a Board of Trustees, committees, and special appointments. A membership of 173 makes our club
among the largest in NJ. Activities include both continuing projects and exciting new ventures.
Our mission is
to stimulate and educate members and the public in the knowledge and practice of conservation, horticulture, and the artistic
use of plant material; enhance the beauty of our Township and our State; sponsor and support educational projects specifically
allied to these purposes; and raise funds by contributions and otherwise to accomplish this mission.
Our Club maintains
the Avis Campbell Gardens and United Way grounds at 60 S. Fullerton Ave., the Triangle Mall Gardens and
fountain areas along Church Street, and assists the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens with garden maintenance and species
identification (see LINKS page). Guided tours of the Avis Campbell Gardens, describing shade-loving, drought-resistant plants,
composting, and garden design are offered to local school children, scouts and other community groups.
For the Annual
Tree Survey club members inspect about 600 trees in Montclair's central business districts, reporting their conditions
to the Township. The Club's Flowering Tree Memorial Fund helps replace damaged or diseased trees
The Club provides
continuing Garden Therapy sessions for seniors at various sites including the Little Nursing Home, Montclair House,
and Senior Activities Center.
Our Club's education involvement in the schools sponsors Junior Garden Clubs.
The youth learn about environmental and conservation topics, and annually help decorate the children's room at the historic
Crane House for the Holidays.
Biennial Flower Shows are open to the public. Visitors enjoy educational exhibits as well as artistic designs created
by talented garden club members. Each spring our May Baskets competition encourages interest in storefronts in the
Montclair business districts as business owners decorate their establishments and help beautify Montclair to the delight of
their customers. Winners receive certificates they proudly display in their windows.
